NVIDIA researchers have discovered the latest technology that could convert 2D images into 3D scenes almost instantly. They made it possible because of the neural rendering model, i.e., NeRF. The first realistic image of the 3D world was captured with a polaroid camera, 75 years ago. It was a big achievement back then as the polaroid could capture 3D scenes in 2D. But now the tables have turned. Today, researchers are trying to reconvert 2D images into three-dimensional scenes in the blink of an eye. This is called “inverse rendering.” It works on the behavior of light in the real world using Artificial Intelligence.

One of the first models of its kind, created by the NVIDIA Research team, combines ultra-fast neural network training with rapid rendering.
This method was used by NVIDIA to create neural radiance fields or NeRF. Instant NeRF is the most recent NeRF technology, which has the potential to achieve 1000x speed in some circumstances.

David Luebke, vice chairman for graphics research at NVIDIA, says, “If traditional 3D representations like polygonal meshes are like vector images, NeRFs are alike bitmap images: they densely capture the way light radiates from an object or within a scene. In that sense, instant NeRF might be as important to 3D as digital cameras and JPEG compression are to 2D photography – vastly increasing the speed, ease, and reach of 3D capture and sharing.”

A NeRF then fills in the gaps by training a tiny neural network to rebuild the image by predicting the color of light-emitting in any direction from any point in 3D space.
